AI Roleplay: Why Do You Want This Role?

Featuring: Dominic Kade

Move past generic flattery and show genuine fit. Learn the Research β†’ Connection β†’ Contribution framework to answer "Why do you want this role?" with specificity that hiring managers remember.

Scenario Backstory

After β€œTell me about yourself,” the second question that separates hired candidates from rejected ones is β€œWhy do you want this role?” Most people answer with some version of β€œI’m passionate about your mission” or β€œIt seems like a great opportunity.” Both are forgettable.

The coach has debriefed enough hiring managers to know exactly what they’re listening for: did this candidate do their homework? Can they articulate why THIS company and THIS role - not just any job with a good salary? And most importantly, what specific value will they bring that the next candidate won’t?

The coach's framework for this question is Research β†’ Connection β†’ Contribution. First, name something specific you know about the company that excites you - a product launch, a strategic pivot, a technical challenge they’ve publicly discussed. Then connect it to your own experience: β€œI’ve spent three years solving exactly that problem.” Finally, articulate the unique contribution you’ll make - not what you’ll learn, but what you’ll build, fix, or improve from day one.

In this session, The coach will ask what role and company you’re targeting, probe whether your answer is specific enough, and help you replace generic enthusiasm with concrete, memorable reasons. The goal is an answer so tailored it couldn’t possibly be used for any other job.
